Our Programs

Building Health, Wellbeing, and Resilience

What do we do?

Through collaboration, research, and action, Farmer’s Health Promotion Collaborative programs focus on the development of transferable health, wellbeing, and resilience skills. These skills bolster self-graded performance, reduce reversible risk factors for ill-health, and improve positive mental health during the program and into the future.

What do our programs involve?

Understanding Health and Habits

Understanding your health and behaviours is the critical first step to taking control of your wellbeing, which is why our programs focus on the relationship between day to day habits and its effects on health, wellbeing, and resilience. Participants learn about the cause and effect of behaviours and how they influence the interdependant sectors of health such as lifestyle choices, social connections, and medical health.

Building a ‘Resilience Toolkit’

Our resilience is not tested when things are going well, but rather when everything is going wrong. Building on healthy habits, participants are taught some of the most effective resilience skills used by high-functioning professionals. Through positive social behaviour and example setting we aim to build more resilient teams in our workforce in turn.

Creating a Supportive Network

Just as we train for physical fitness, we can also train to build our positive mental health. This sector of the program will discuss the building blocks to flourish, including positive emotions, thoughts, connections and communication. Also get some practical tips on keeping precious energy reserves topped up to cope with the unexpected.

Project: 100 Healthy Farmers

The biggest assets in a successful agribusiness are the healthy brains that drive and future-proof sustainable production.

Farmers Health Promotion Collaborative’s (FHPC) sets out to identify agricultural influencers who can make a real difference to inspire, set precedent, and lead community change in strengthening rural industrys’ greatest asset – its people.

What is the issue being addressed?

At present, we know that the current healthcare model does not support very well; health promotion and prevention strategies for rural Australians. This, in conjunction with social attitudes and beliefs regarding endurance and stoicism in the bush has been linked with poorer mental health outcomes within regional communities, such as anxiety, depression, and suicide. This project aims to introduce several positive strategies that are transferrable across communities to strengthen mental wellbeing.

What is the aim?

The research aims to prove that the introduction of a health promotion intervention to identified role models in rural Australia, contributing to increased community engagement and ownership of individual health futures, and in turn improve workplace performance.

How will we achieve the aim?

Firstly, criteria will be developed to identify key industry leaders and influencers of culture and mindsets in communities and workplaces. This will be crucial in scaling the model later for broader industry engagement.

The second part of this project will enrol key industry influencers in a five-year program, so they may learn translatable skills, practices, and tools to bolster their own healthy habits and form sustainable lifestyles.

Third, in partnership with collaborator Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), FHPC will deploy Ford Health Rural’s customized Complete Wellbeing model for rural workforce health, wellbeing, and resilience improvement.

Improving the behaviour and outputs of high-functioning agribusiness workers is built upon the strong foundations of robust medical and physical health. This includes components such as high-quality sleep, lifestyle choices, work patterns, connections to others, and resilience – all of which are anchors of a proven healthcare model known as the Complete Wellbeing Program (CWP), licensed through Ford Health Rural (FHR) to FHPC for the purpose of the project. The outcomes of CWP platform are enhanced self-graded performance by up to 11%, reduced reversible chronic disease risks by 8%, and lifted mental health by 8.4% in urban settings, when participants interact with the program over a 5-year period.
